Abbot, John B.D.
(fl. 1623)
   English poet and divine who embraced the Catholic religion and retired to the convent of St. John the Baptist at Antwerp. There, in 1623, he wrote Jesus Praefigured or a Poem of the Holy Name of Jesus (in five books). The work is dedicated to Charles, Prince of Wales (later Charles I, 1625-49). A second dedication is to Señora Doña Maria de Austria, the daughter of Philip III of Spain. He also wrote a long poem, "To the High and Mightie Prince, Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Earle of Chester." The Sad Condition of a Distracted Kingdome was published in 1645 and Devovt Rhapsodies in 1647. His poem "The Fable of Philo the Jew" is an imaginary conversation between God and the angels about creation.
